The Allmusic review by Scott Yanow awarded the album 4 stars and stated "the trumpeter is typically distinctive, swinging and inventive within the hard bop genre".[2] Frank Kofsky noted that Mitchell's style "reflects the attainment of a measure of self-assurance and restraint, hallmarks ... of the mature artist."[4]
