India sent a delegation to compete at the 1972 Summer Paralympics in Heidelberg, West Germany. They sent ten competitors, seven male and three female.[1]

Murlikant Petkar became the first Indian Paralympic champion when he won a gold medal in swimming. He is from Sangli, Maharashtra. He was a boxer, in the Indian army. In the 1965 war, he was hit by 9 bullets, but he survived. He started swimming, to improve his leg muscles. In 1972, he won the gold medal and set a new record in swimming. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2017.[2]
