"Training Season" is a song by English-Albanian singer Dua Lipa. It was released on 15 February 2024, as the second single from her third studio album, Radical Optimism (2024). Lipa premiered the song at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards before its release. "Training Season" peaked at number four on the UK Singles Chart and at number six on the Billboard Global 200. Elsewhere, the song reached the top ten in various countries, including Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg, and New Zealand.

Background

Earlier in 2023, Dua Lipa announced her upcoming third studio album would be released sometime in 2024 with a new sound that sees her moving away from the disco sound of Future Nostalgia (2020), embracing more of 1970s-era psychedelia.[2] After having deleted all of her Instagram posts in October 2023, Lipa posted a picture of herself with red hair captioned "miss me?".[3] Following the single "Houdini" (2023), Lipa released "Training Season" as the second single from her upcoming album on 15 February 2024.[4] It was written by Lipa, along with Caroline Ailin, Danny L Harle, Tobias Jesso Jr., Kevin Parker, Martina Sorbara, Nick Gale, Shaun Frank, Steve Francis Richard Mastroianni, and Yaakov Gruzman.[5] Its lyrics were conceived by Lipa after going on mediocre dates, having her denouncing unimpressive suitors.[6] She elaborated on the dual meaning of its lyrics, stating that it is about both informing men that she will no longer be training them about how to treat her as well as the completion of her own personal growth.[6]

The singer previously teased the song title through a picture she shared on Instagram, wearing a sweater with the caption "Training Season" during a rehearsal.[7] On 24 January 2024 Lipa shared an instrumental snippet of the song through WhatsApp. She announced the single the following day through her social media,[8] while also posting a clip on Tik Tok singing the song's chorus in her car.[6]

Composition

"Training Season" is three minutes and 29 seconds long.[9] Parker produced and programmed the song, and he handled engineering alongside Cameron Gower Poole. He played bass guitar, drums, guitar, keyboards, percussion, and provided sound effects; Harle provided drum programming; and Ailin and Poole provided vocal production. Parker, Ailin, and Jesso Jr. delivered the background vocals. Josh Gudwin mixed the song, and Chris Gehringer mastered it.[5]

"Training Season" is a disco-pop song with influences of Eurodisco.[10][11] It has also been characterised as a pop song.[12][13] The song employs a hook, disco beat, and guitar syncopations.[14][15][16] "Training Season" includes girl group harmonies and a dancefloor pulse.[16][17] Consequence's Mary Siroky believed the song's disco-pop sound kept with that of "Houdini" and Future Nostalgia, while Beats Per Minute's Lucas Martins thought it was "a better representation of [Radical Optimism's] sonic palette of synths, organic basslines, and guitar flourishes".[10][18] Aspects of it received comparisons to the work of ABBA: its piano line to "Dancing Queen" (1976),[15][19] the Middle Eastern-influenced melody to "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" (1979) and "Voulez-Vous" (1979),[15] and its robustness to "Lay All Your Love on Me" (1981).[20]

The lyrics of "Training Season" are about Lipa's demands from her romantic partners as she chides bad dates and underscores her self-worth,[21][22] highlighting the importance of boundaries and ideals in relationships.[23] In the first verse, Lipa articulates her skepticism about a prospective partner and considers not proceeding with a relationship.[24] She yearns for someone who can provide emotional support and be in command when Lipa feels vulnerable, and who she can have meaningful conversation with. Lipa asks a person if he can meet these requirements because she no longer wants to have to guide people how to love her correctly: "Training season's over".[25] In the second verse, she takes a vexed tone and recalls how she undeservedly tried to be positive about her previous partners, hoping that a better suitor "hits me like an arrow".[26] Lipa questions the prospective partner about his commitment in the bridge, whether he would take initiative himself or someone would have to prompt him to act.[24] Siroky believed its theme of self-confidence resembled Lipa's 2017 single "New Rules".[10]

Critical reception

Aimee Phillips of Clash called it alongside "Houdini" "promising", noting that both acts "as more grounded, self-assured counterparts to Lipa’s googly-eyed opener. Not only are the beats darker, more textured and sexier, but the lyrics have more purpose, bringing us back to the strong and confident pop star image Dua Lipa has long portrayed."[27] Angie Martoccio of Rolling Stone praised her vocals on the track for sounding "stronger than ever", while also noting ABBA's reference.[28] Alexis Petridis of The Guardian echoed the same feeling, highlighting ABBA's 'Dancing Queen' piano line".[19] For The Arts Desk's Joe Muggs, Lipa continues the reign of Future Nostalgia on the album's three singles with "that Daft Punk-ish disco framework and some rock solid pop songwriting, and still absolutely sound like… well, like Dua Lipa."[29] Calling it an "ear candy", Jon Pareles from The New York Times was impressed by the "tickling guitar syncopations and girl-group harmonies popping out of nowhere."[16] Simirlaly, Nick Reilly of Rolling Stone UK labeled it a "one-two punch" track "which proudly wear the sonic DNA of Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker.[30] Rania Aniftos of Billboard ranked it seven (out of eleven) on the album's best songs, claiming "if the lyrics aren't motivating enough, the thumping bass should do the trick."[31] On the other hand, El Hunt, writing for Evening Standard, called it "underwhelming".[32]

Commercial performance

"Training Season" debuted at number four on the UK Singles Chart and became Lipa's 15th top 10 single.[33] The song received a silver certification in the United Kingdom from the British Phonographic Industry.[34] It entered the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 27 on the chart issued for 2 March 2024.[35] "Training Season" debuted at number 11 on the Canadian Hot 100 issued for the same date and was certified platinum by Music Canada.[36][37] In Australia, the song entered at number 12 and received a platinum certification from the Australian Recording Industry Association.[38][39] It debuted at number 10 in New Zealand and became Lipa's ninth top 10 single.[40]

"Training Season" charted at number six on the Billboard Global 200.[41] Elsewhere, the song reached the top 10, at number one in the Commonwealth of Independent States,[42] Latvia,[43] and Lithuania,[44] number two in Greece and Russia,[45][46] number three in Croatia and San Marino,[47][48] number four in Belgium,[49] Estonia,[50] Hungary,[51] Lebanon,[52] Poland,[53] and Slovakia,[54] number five in Romania,[55] number six in Belarus,[56] Ireland,[57] and Kazakhstan,[58] number seven in Bulgaria and South Africa,[59][60] number eight in the Netherlands and Paraguay,[61][62] and number 10 in Luxembourg.[63] It received a gold certification in France,[64] Italy,[65] Poland,[66] Portugal,[67] Spain,[68] and Switzerland.[69]

Music video

Vincent Haycock directed the music video for "Training Season", which was released alongside the song.[70][71] In it, Lipa drinks a coffee in a cafe, preoccupied by listening to several voicemails from former partners apologising and asking for a second chance.[22][72] She remains undaunted, realizing that the men surrounding her are all trying to impress and capture her attention.[73][25] Lipa begins to think about what she is looking for in a suitor.[72] She stays reserved as they begin to spin and the room descends into disorder.[73][25] Upon its release, the video received over one million views within the first 12 hours of availability.[22] Marie Claire's Sophia Vilensky praised Lipa's hair in it as "a casual sunlit red that looks natural as ever".[74]

Live performances

Lipa opened the 66th Annual Grammy Awards with the first live performance of "Training Season" on 4 February 2024, as a mashup with "Houdini" and "Dance the Night" (2023). This preceded the release of "Training Season".[75][76][77] She wore a leather-and-mesh bodysuit with silver straps and knee-high platform boots.[78][79] Lipa performed it as the first song, dancing on a giant silver jungle gym which was rotated by leather-clothed muscular male background dancers.[80][81] The set employed blue stage lights and a vertiginous backdrop of mirrors and pyrotechnics.[82][83] One line from "Dance the Night" was included,[84][85] before she transitioned into singing "Houdini" in the middle of the stage and performed the dance sequence from its music video.[86][87] It was well-received by the audience.[87][88] Rolling Stone's Brittany Spanos believed the performance was a great way to open the show,[78] and some others praised the choreography.[81][89] Alex Gonzalez of Uproxx and Alex Hopper of American Songwriter were positive about the male dancers, with the latter including the performance in his three favourite live moments from Lipa.[90][91] The Telegraph's Sanghamitra Chatterjee and Parade's Matthew Huff included it among the night's highlights,[81][88] whereas USA Today's Patrick Ryan ranked it ninth among the twelve performances.[83]

On 2 March 2024, Lipa opened the Brit Awards by reprising "Training Season"[92][93] in snug black leather shorts with a lace-up front, a black bra in a cropped leather jacket, and tall lace-up boots with thick block heels. She also wore layers of silver chain necklaces and sparkling rings.[94][95] Lipa began by singing alone, but background dancers descended from the top during the second verse and performed Cirque du Soleil-inspired acrobatic tricks in the air.[96][97] After the song's bridge, two aerial dancers seized her arms and lifted her off the ground and she levitated in the air.[96] Critics believed the performance captivated the audience,[94][96] and Uproxx's Flisadam Pointer thought the aerial dance moves were impressive and Lipa displayed stamina.[12]

Lipa recorded a live performance of "Training Season", which was called the "London Sessions".[98] She sang the song at the Time 100 Gala in April 2024,[99] and she reprised it alongside a band at the Maida Vale Studios in London the following month.[100][101][102] Lipa included it as the first song on the set list of her 2024-2025 concert tour, the Radical Optimism Tour,[103] and performed it at festivals like NOS Alive and Mad Cool.[104][105][106] On 28 June 2024, she opened her Glastonbury Festival 2024 set with "Training Season";[107][108] it began with stationary dancers, evoking a dystopian montage reminiscent of The Running Man (1987), before Lipa walked out to a clip of Peter Fonda from the 1966 film The Wild Angels.[109][110] NME's Liberty Dunworth praised the atmosphere created just a few minutes into Lipa's set, and BBC News's Mark Savage believed the choreography was on the level of a proper award show performance.[110][111]
